Heat Pump Troubles in Your Fraser Valley Home?

Lukewarm air, grinding noises or ice on the outdoor unit that will not clear mean your heat pump needs a professional repair. Rep-Air Heating and Cooling is ready to provide expert repair and service across the entire Fraser Valley.

Warning Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Professional Attention

When your heat pump starts acting up, it usually gives you some clues. Ignoring these symptoms can turn a small fix into a major headache, or even a full system replacement. Pay attention to these common warning signs that tell you it's time to call in the experts.

No Heating or Cooling

Your heat pump might be running, but the air coming through your vents isn't reaching the temperature you set. It could be blowing lukewarm air in winter or just ambient air in summer, leaving your home uncomfortable. This often points to a major component failure, like a bad compressor or a significant refrigerant leak preventing proper heat transfer.

Strange Noises from the Unit

Are you hearing grinding, hissing, buzzing, or persistent rattling sounds from either your indoor or outdoor unit? These aren't normal operating sounds and indicate mechanical stress or a failing part. Grinding suggests motor bearing issues, while a hissing sound can be a tell-tale sign of a refrigerant leak.

Excessive or Persistent Icing on the Outdoor Unit

While some light frost is normal during winter, your outdoor unit shouldn't be covered in a thick sheet of ice, especially if the defrost cycle should have run. Persistent icing drastically reduces efficiency and can be caused by low refrigerant, dirty coils, or a faulty defrost system. This is a common issue we tackle during Fraser Valley’s wet, cool winters.

Increased Energy Bills

Have your monthly electricity bills suddenly spiked without any change in your heating or cooling habits? An inefficient heat pump has to work much harder to maintain your desired temperature, consuming more power in the process. This is a symptom of an underlying problem, forcing your system to operate under strain.

Weak Airflow or Uneven Temperatures

If the air coming from your vents feels weak, or if some rooms are noticeably warmer or colder than others, you have an airflow problem. This can be due to a struggling blower motor, clogged air filters, or dirty coils restricting proper air distribution. Poor airflow makes your heat pump work overtime and affects overall comfort.

Understanding Common Heat Pump Failures

Our technicians have seen hundreds of heat pump issues across the Fraser Valley. While symptoms might vary, the underlying mechanical problems often fall into a few key categories. Knowing these can help you understand what might be happening with your system.

Refrigerant Leaks

Heat pumps rely on a precise amount of refrigerant to transfer heat efficiently between your home and the outside air. Over time, wear and tear, corrosion, or even manufacturing defects can lead to small leaks in the coils or lines. When refrigerant levels drop, your heat pump struggles to heat or cool, leading to reduced performance and higher energy bills.

Electrical Component Failure

Your heat pump contains numerous electrical parts like capacitors, contactors, relays, and complex wiring that control its operation. These components can fail due to age, power surges, or consistent cycling, causing the unit to stop working entirely, run intermittently, or malfunction. A faulty electrical component can prevent your heat pump from starting or completing its cycles.

Compressor Problems

The compressor is the heart of your heat pump system, responsible for circulating refrigerant and creating the pressure needed for heat exchange. It can fail due to prolonged operation with low refrigerant, age, or electrical issues. A failing compressor often results in a complete loss of heating or cooling capacity, making it one of the most significant and costly repairs.

Dirty Coils and Air Filters

Over time, dust, dirt, pet dander, and other airborne particles accumulate on your heat pump’s evaporator and condenser coils, as well as in the air filter. This buildup acts as an insulator, severely restricting the system's ability to efficiently transfer heat and move air. Dirty coils force your heat pump to work harder, reducing efficiency and increasing wear.

Defrost Cycle Malfunctions

In colder temperatures, moisture from the air can freeze on the outdoor coil. Heat pumps have a defrost cycle to periodically melt this ice, ensuring efficient operation. If the defrost sensor, control board, or reversing valve fails, the unit won't defrost properly, leading to persistent ice buildup and a significant loss of heating capacity, a common issue during our damp Fraser Valley winters.

Before You Book

What does it cost, and what is covered?

How pricing works

A service visit is $189, and that fee is waived when you go ahead with the repair or installation we quote. Estimates for new equipment are free. Your technician diagnoses the problem first, shows you the readings and photos behind it, and gives you a written estimate, often with a few options, before touching anything. Work starts only when you approve it. Questions first? Call (778) 728-1956.

Repair or replace?

It comes down to the age of the equipment, the size of the repair, and how well the system is keeping up. Past roughly 12–15 years, a major repair usually costs more over the next few winters than replacing does, especially once rebates are counted. Your technician lays out both numbers and you decide.

What moves the price

  • How big the system is and how efficient you want it to be
  • Access, a tight crawlspace or a third-floor attic takes longer than a garage
  • Venting, gas, or electrical work the job triggers
  • Permits and inspection, where Technical Safety BC requires them
  • Which FortisBC and CleanBC rebates you qualify for

Financing runs from $1,000 to $100,000, so a big repair can be paid monthly too. See how financing works.

Warranty and workmanship

  • New installations: up to 12 years of parts and labour coverage. Conditions apply, including annual maintenance, which is what a maintenance plan is for.
  • Repairs: covered under the manufacturer's warranty on the part, traditionally around 12 months depending on the manufacturer and product.
  • No Lemon Guarantee: if we install a new unit and it keeps failing, we work with the manufacturer to replace the unit.
  • Workmanship: before we recommend replacing a part or a piece of equipment, you get detailed readings from industry specific meters, photos of any concerns, and a full written estimate for repair and for replacement based on the age and condition of the equipment.
  • We are registered with Technical Safety BC for gas work, WorkSafeBC compliant, and fully insured, and we pull permits where the work requires them.
  • Full details are on our warranty and workmanship page.
