Is Your Home's Air Stuffy and Your System Struggling in the Fraser Valley?

Weak airflow, dust, stale air and rising energy bills often mean your furnace or central AC filter is overdue or the wrong fit. Rep-Air Heating and Cooling is ready to provide expert furnace and central AC filter installation.

Warning Signs You Need Furnace & Central AC Filter Installation

Reduced Airflow from Vents

You're standing in front of a supply vent, and the air coming out feels weak, barely a whisper, even when the system is running full blast. Some rooms might feel noticeably colder or hotter than others, creating uneven temperatures throughout your home. A clogged filter acts like a dam, restricting the volume of air that can be pulled into your furnace or AC unit. This "starves" the system of air, preventing it from distributing conditioned air effectively through your ductwork. Beyond the discomfort of uneven temperatures, this restricted airflow puts immense stress on your HVAC equipment, potentially leading to premature fan motor failure or a frozen evaporator coil, which are costly repairs.

Increased Dust and Allergy Symptoms

You're dusting surfaces more frequently, only to find a new layer of fine particulate matter appearing almost immediately. Family members might be experiencing more sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, or general allergy and asthma flare-ups while inside the house. Your filter's job is to trap airborne particles like dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores. When a filter is overloaded or the wrong type, these contaminants aren't being captured effectively, recirculating back into your living spaces. Poor indoor air quality isn't just an annoyance; it's a health concern that can exacerbate respiratory conditions.

Higher Energy Bills

Your monthly utility bills are creeping up, even though your thermostat settings haven't changed, and you haven't been using your heating or cooling system any more than usual. The system seems to be running constantly, struggling to reach or maintain the desired temperature. When your furnace or AC filter is clogged, your system has to work significantly harder to move air, drawing more electricity and running longer to compensate for reduced airflow. Over time, this inefficiency can cost you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in wasted energy. This constant overexertion also accelerates wear and tear on critical components, increasing the likelihood of expensive breakdowns.

Unusual Noises from Your HVAC System

You start hearing new, odd sounds coming from your furnace or AC unit: a whistling, rattling, or even a strained groaning noise that wasn't there before. These sounds often become more pronounced when the system is running. A severely clogged filter can create a whistling sound as air struggles to be pulled through tiny openings, and the increased strain on the fan motor can cause it to groan or hum louder. These noises are often a cry for help from your system, indicating components are under excessive strain. Ignoring these sounds can lead to premature motor failure, damage to fan blades, or even a complete system shutdown.

System Short Cycling or Overheating

Your furnace or AC unit turns on, runs for a short period, and then shuts off, only to restart again a short while later, making it hard to maintain a consistent temperature. You might also notice a burning smell, especially from the furnace. In heating mode, a clogged filter restricts airflow over the heat exchanger, causing it to overheat and trigger safety shutdowns. In cooling mode, restricted airflow can cause the evaporator coil to freeze or the compressor to overheat, leading to similar safety shutdowns. Short cycling is incredibly inefficient and wears out your system much faster than normal operation, potentially leading to catastrophic component failure or, rarely, a fire hazard.

Common Causes of Furnace & Central AC Filter Problems

Overdue Filter Changes

This is the most common culprit behind filter problems. Homeowners often forget to check or change their filters regularly, missing the recommended 1-3 month replacement schedule for standard 1-inch filters. The solution is simple: consistent replacement with the correct filter. We'll help you establish a routine and select the right MERV rating for your home's needs, ensuring proper installation.

High Particulate Load in Your Home

Some homes naturally produce more airborne contaminants due to pets, smokers, ongoing construction, or proximity to busy roads or wildfire smoke, which is common in the Fraser Valley. For homes with a high particulate load, a standard 1-inch filter might not be enough. We often recommend upgrading to a higher MERV filter, considering a media filter cabinet

Incorrect Filter Type or MERV Rating

It's not uncommon for homeowners or even less experienced technicians to install the wrong type or MERV rating of filter. A filter with too low a MERV rating won't capture enough particles, while one with too high a rating can restrict airflow and strain your system. Our Licensed technicians understand the balance between filtration efficiency and airflow. We'll assess your system's specifications and your home's unique air quality needs to recommend and install the optimal filter type and MERV rating.

System Running Constantly

If your furnace or AC is constantly running, perhaps due to extended heat waves, cold snaps, poor insulation, or air leaks, your filter will naturally get dirty much faster. Year-round humidity in the Fraser Valley can also contribute to systems working harder, accelerating filter accumulation. While regular filter changes are key, we can also look at the bigger picture during a service visit. We can identify if your system is oversized or undersized, or if there are other issues contributing to constant operation, leading to better efficiency and extended filter life.

What to Expect During Your Furnace & Central AC Filter Service Visit

When a Rep-Air Heating and Cooling licensed technician arrives at your Fraser Valley home for a furnace or central AC filter installation, you can expect a thorough and professional service experience. We don't just swap out a filter; we ensure your system is set up for optimal performance and air quality.

First, we'll start with a brief discussion about any specific concerns you've noticed, like increased dust, allergy symptoms, or unusual system behavior. This helps us understand your home's unique needs. Then, we'll locate your existing filter and carefully remove it, inspecting its condition and the surrounding filter cabinet for any signs of damage or excessive build-up.

We’ll assess your HVAC system's make and model, considering its design specifications and your home's typical air quality challenges: whether it's dealing with pet dander, local pollen, or general Fraser Valley atmospheric conditions. Based on this, we'll recommend the most appropriate filter type and MERV rating for your system, balancing effective filtration with proper airflow to prevent strain on your equipment. This might involve a standard pleated filter, a high-efficiency media filter, or even discussing options for a filter cabinet upgrade if your current setup is insufficient. Once the correct filter is selected, we'll install it properly, ensuring a snug fit to prevent air from bypassing the filter, which is a common issue with DIY installations. We'll then conduct a quick system check, running your furnace or AC to verify proper airflow and operation. We can also provide advice on filter maintenance schedules tailored to your household's specific conditions, helping you maximize the life of your new filter and maintain optimal indoor air quality. As a Technical Safety BC and WorkSafeBC compliant company, you can trust that our work meets the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

Before You Book

What does it cost, and what is covered?

How pricing works

A service visit is $189, and that fee is waived when you go ahead with the repair or installation we quote. Estimates for new equipment are free. Your technician diagnoses the problem first, shows you the readings and photos behind it, and gives you a written estimate, often with a few options, before touching anything. Work starts only when you approve it. Questions first? Call (778) 728-1956.

Repair or replace?

It comes down to the age of the equipment, the size of the repair, and how well the system is keeping up. Past roughly 12–15 years, a major repair usually costs more over the next few winters than replacing does, especially once rebates are counted. Your technician lays out both numbers and you decide.

What moves the price

  • How big the system is and how efficient you want it to be
  • Access, a tight crawlspace or a third-floor attic takes longer than a garage
  • Venting, gas, or electrical work the job triggers
  • Permits and inspection, where Technical Safety BC requires them
  • Which FortisBC and CleanBC rebates you qualify for

Financing runs from $1,000 to $100,000, so a big repair can be paid monthly too. See how financing works.

  • New installations: up to 12 years of parts and labour coverage. Conditions apply, including annual maintenance, which is what a maintenance plan is for.
  • Repairs: covered under the manufacturer's warranty on the part, traditionally around 12 months depending on the manufacturer and product.
  • No Lemon Guarantee: if we install a new unit and it keeps failing, we work with the manufacturer to replace the unit.
