Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical in Mary Hill, BC

Furnace, heat pump, boiler, plumbing and panel work for the older detached homes of Mary Hill in south Port Coquitlam, from a locally owned contractor.

Updating the Systems in Mary Hill's Older Houses

Mary Hill is one of the more settled parts of Port Coquitlam. It is mostly detached houses, with townhomes on its northern edge, and a quiet feel even though downtown and the highway are close by. A good share of the houses date from the 1960s, and a few are much older.

That age is the heart of most comfort questions we hear here. An original duct layout designed for a single furnace, a panel installed before anyone owned an air conditioner, a gas line that was never sized for a second appliance. None of these are urgent on their own, but they decide what upgrades are practical. Our job is to sort out which ones matter for your plans.

Home Services in Mary Hill

Heating

Some older Mary Hill houses still heat with a hot water boiler and radiators or baseboards, while others run a gas furnace. We service and replace both types.

Cooling

Houses from the 1960s were rarely built with cooling in mind. If your ducts are in good shape, central AC can be added.

Heat Pumps & Mini-Splits

For a boiler-heated home with no ducts, a ductless mini-split is often the simplest way to add cooling and efficient shoulder-season heat. Ducted homes can look at a central heat pump.

Water Heaters & Plumbing

Older plumbing and fixtures tend to show their age first in the water heater and the toilets.

Indoor Air Quality

Older ductwork can gather decades of dust. A UV light at the coil is one option for homeowners who want cleaner equipment.

Electrical

Before a heat pump or EV charger goes into a 1960s house, the panel needs a look. Many need more room or more capacity.

Mary Hill's Setting and Housing Age

Mary Hill is a larger subarea in south Port Coquitlam, close to downtown and the Mary Hill Bypass. Local listings put many of its homes along Mary Hill Road, Eastern Drive and Western Drive. Much of the area looks out over Colony Farm's open water and green space or toward the Fraser River, with mountain views beyond. Kilmer Park, a forested park with trails at the edge of Lower Mary Hill, and Cameron Park, beside Thompson Park, are the local green spaces.

The housing tells the story of the neighbourhood's growth. Property records show houses on Western Drive built in 1965 and on Mary Hill Road built in 1967, and at least one house on Mary Hill Road dates back to 1914. Newer homes, townhouses and condos have been added over time, so you will find a real mix on a single block.

For a house built in the mid-1960s, a few patterns come up again and again. Ducts were often sized for a furnace with a much bigger blower than today's equipment, or they were added later through tight spaces. Insulation levels were lower, which means more heat loss through the walls and attic and a bigger job for any new system. Electrical panels from that era were sized for a much shorter list of appliances. And many homes have had renovations that added rooms the original heating was never meant to reach.

Sitting close to the river flats and Colony Farm, the lower parts of the area can feel the damp of the valley floor through the wet months. Keeping basement mechanical rooms dry and ventilated helps protect water heaters and furnace cabinets from rust. When we plan an upgrade in Mary Hill, we start with a load calculation and a look at the panel, so the new equipment matches the house as it stands today.

Gas service is another common question in Mary Hill. Many older houses had a single gas line run for the original furnace, and adding a range, a dryer, a fireplace or a tankless water heater can call for a larger line or a new branch. Because Justin is a Class B gasfitter, we can look at the gas side and the heating side in the same visit, which keeps planning simple.
